Zhang Shaoshi, born in Yi County, Hebei in 1951, is a renowned contemporary Chinese painter, particularly famous for his freehand flowerand-bird paintings and meticulous tiger paintings. Influenced by his family's artistic atmosphere from a young age, he developed a passion for painting. In his early, he received guidance from famous artists and systematically studied fine arts knowledge and fundamentals. Later, he formally became a disciple of Lou Shibai, a master of traditional painting and a disciple of Qi Baishi, to study large-scale freehand flower-and-bird painting, thereby becoming an important successor of the "Qi School.
In his youth, Zhang Shaoshi served in the military and spent three years in military camps in the Northwest region. This experience not only tempered his will but profoundly influenced his artistic path. As he said: "Military life is a precious treasure I can enjoy for a lifetime; it not only influenced my own character and but also my artistic quality and style." The perseverance and passion of a soldier planted the emotional seeds for the "tiger" imagery in his later creations.
After ending military career, Zhang Shaoshi continued to pursue advanced studies under art masters such as Li Keran and Lou Shibai. During over thirty years of artistic exploration, he formed a unique style where "meticulous and freehand techniques complement each other, and movement and stillness are combined to convey spirit through ink." His works possess traditional brushwork foundations and modern aesthetic charm, continuously innovating through inheritance.
In terms of subject matter, Zhang Shaoshi is particularly fond of painting tigers and flowers and. The tigers under his brush take various forms—tigers going up the mountain, tigers coming down the mountain, tigers in the snow, crouching tigers none are. To capture the spirit of the tiger, he often goes to zoos for observation and sketching, and even uses photographic materials to repeatedly study the tiger's bones muscles, and movements. His created long scroll "Hundred Tigers Painting" reaches thirty meters in length, with vivid forms and rigorous composition. It was praised by his teacher Shibai in the colophon as "worthy of being called the King of Tigers," and Zhang Shaoshi thus earned the nickname "Tiger King."
In addition to tiger theme, Zhang Shaoshi has also achieved remarkable success in large-scale freehand flower-and-bird painting. He inherited Qi Baishi's aesthetic concept of "between resemblance and non-resemblance," and enjoys using bright and cheerful colors to depict peonies, wisteria, chrysanthemums, plantains, ducklings bees, and other subjects. The paintings are vivid and lively, appreciated by both the refined and the common people, full of childlike innocence and vitality. His works are but not vulgar, and bright but not delicate, injecting new vitality into Chinese flower-and-bird painting.
Zhang Shaoshi is currently the director of the Zhangoshi Art Gallery, president of the Zhang Shaoshi Art Research Association, director of the China Calligraphy and Painting Research Association, consultant of the Beijing Taoran Call and Painting Academy, art consultant of the Beijing Wenfang Sibao Hall, and a first-class painter. For decades, he has tirelessly explored the artistic path, life experiences and natural insights into his brushwork. His works not only demonstrate exquisite skills but also convey a harmonious, warm, and inclusive personal charm.
His works been reported multiple times in the People's Daily, PLA Daily, Literature and Art Daily, and the military newspapers of various former military regions. His works are across China and abroad, collected by major museums. His 12-foot-long scroll "Majestic Wind Over Ten Thousand Miles" is collected by the Military of the Chinese People's Revolution.
His art is the fusion of meticulous and freehand styles, the conveyance of spirit between movement and stillness, and more importantly a dialogue between man and nature, brushwork and the soul. Between tradition and modernity, through free and sincere creation, Zhang Shaoshi has stood as a uniquely tree in the art world.
